As far as I know all Les Paul Studios have a carved top.

They are all carved tops are they not, just a basic maple cap not figured?

Those Tributes (50s/60s) are guitar perfection though. Everyone I have played has been glorious.

Originally, the LP Studio was intended to be a Standard in construction and feel but without the shiny bits (hence "Studio" because it wouldn't be seen in public). That means carved maple top and similar pickups, but no binding and simpler inlays.

So really the question is; do Gibson do an LP Studio that doesn't have a carve top?

The studio tops are less dished than a Standard or a historic, but they’re still carved

  • my les paul studio raw power seems to have the same amount of carved "dishness" as my friends les paul custom

Yeah, the less defined carve is a fairly recent thing.  I think some have a thinner top too

I thought the question was going to be... ‘a guitar that stays in tune for more than five minutes.’
