How can you tell without removing the old one first?

Tusqs have a nib underneath that you can cut off to reveal a curved bottom (ooer) if needed

They also have flat ones, if I have a flat bottom and use a tab one that will reduce the contact area between nut and neck , wont this be a problem? Would that effect the guitars tone in any way?

Sorry, the ones I had (admittedly for squiers) did have the nibs on to give you the option

I fitted one to my Squier Tele, it had the tab option, the fretboard was flat on the Squier and to be fair I haven't had any issues with it.

The old one is out, looks like I have to order up a curved one.
