Angle over the bridge is now reasonable.

Having put the guitar back together I found it was no longer earthed, so removed the strings and replaced the earth wire to the bridge. Tested all the earth wires before I put it back together - all ok. Put it back together again - there's still an earth problem. Bother - will have to wait for another day.
While working on this guitar I noticed that my soldering iron generates an amazing amount of electical interference. Playing through a practice amp in my workshop with the soldering iron on I could hardly tell that the earth hum had been fixed. Turned the soldering iron off and there was virtually no hum at all. So be warned, if you're checking out a hum problem - turn your soldering iron off first.
