    Happy Birthday, mister, enjoy yerself.

Looking back (I'll be 69 in a few weeks), I think my 40's were in some ways the best decade - I went back to gigging in a covers band and still had the energy for it!

If it's any consolation, I'm 43 and the thinnest I've been in 20ish years.
I’m not sure that is how consolations work.
    Hmm. Yes

I meant to indicate that middle aged spread isn't an inevitability...

Many happy returns from a fellow 78er. I’m still in my thirties though for a bit longer.

    I don’t mind getting old - 40 is the new 30 anyway...

...my first day as a forty-something, and I'm still not a rock star. There's something wrong with the world.

On the other hand, let the middle-age spread begin :D
Lucky bugger, I wish I was forty.......Happy Birthday, buy a new guitar...(while you still can!)..probably a Strat to fit round the proposed new middle...

    Thanks, everyone.

For the avoidance of doubt, though, 40 was last year. This is my first year as a 40-something.

There is still hope. Beard, baseball cap and the blues. It worked for Seasick Steve. Although you might have to invent a back story about living as a hobo and jumping freight trains.

    Happy Birthday mate.
40 is "just broken in" so don't let it stop you.

    Enjoy yourself man.

If it's any consolation my 40's were good but my 50's were brilliant. 62 now so starting to creak a bit but life is still good.
This is absurd.  You don’t know what you’re talking about.  It warrants combat.

I enjoyed my 40s more than my 30s, my 50s have been a bit crap so far, TBH

TBH - passing 35 was the real killer cos was never any way was going to be considered young enough to play for England or be in a hip band. So consign yourself to applying your earned wisdom to assist other yoofs who as we all know, are a fick as fuck today and will never make anything of themselves. Teach, Coach and Produce. This is where your rewards now lay.

I just turned 49, so next year is 50.  I've come to the conclusion that I can't deny being middle aged any more.

Can still beat my daughters on Mario Karts though.  Admittedly they are completely rubbish at.

This for me too - and because in the old Shakespearean reckoning, it's exactly halfway... although with modern life expectancy it isn't likely to be.

I also played a gig on or just after my 35th, and for the first time I noticed that I was completely invisible to the girlfriends of the younger band who were supporting us :).
