Guitar Auctions

What's Hot
Hello all,

I am looking for a bit of advice and feedback if possible please?

A few months back I was trying to find a particular guitar for my father in law who is an avid collector and thought that a dedicated guitar auction might be a good place to start. Unfortunately I could only really find one that I considered to be a dedicated/ specialist auction at the time and didn't really get a good feel for it when I visited in person.

With this in mind I decided to start to speak with a few people about how they buy guitars and thought that starting a new and dedicated auction site and hopefully live and open room in the near future might not be a bad idea. That said, before I end up sat lonely with only a load of strings and wall mounted guitars to keep me happy I thought I would ask the question of this forum;

Would you consider buying from an auction supported by some guitar specialists with the right level of info and support available? And would you also consider listing and selling your guitars and equipment through this format?

Many thanks

    If I were looking for an instrument, I would buy it from any place it was available, provided it was the right price (and genuine).

    What he said.

    You may find some hostility on this forum to auction houses in general and their fees system in particular. Avaricious people want all of the proceeds for themselves when selling and resent giving anything away to a third party when buying.

    Do not accept my assertion. Read through some of the griping Discussions about bad eBay experiences.
    You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

    Have you studied Gardiner Houldgate at all? A lot of U.K. vintage guitar dealers get their stock from there and they seem to have the monopoly on the traditional guitar auction currently with some great stock which realises some, quite frankly, bonkers prices.

    Their website is www.guitar-auctions.co.uk so you may need to think about your name/website a little more as it seems a little close?

    I’d certainly be interested to see what you intend to do differently to GH, best of luck.

    As a buyer I think the thing that you could offer different to eBay, Gardiner & Houldgate and most other auction houses is an authoritative verdict as to working condition for people buying sight unseen. You could look at the VEMIA auction which is run by Spheremusic as an example -- the guy who runs it personally checks most of the lots to see if they are in working order and to make sure that any flaws are described. He also personally packs and ships many of the items. So if you've always wanted, say, an SH-101, you know that you can safely buy one through that auction without having tested it yourself.

  • As a genuine question to you, how will your site differ form current places like Gardiner Houlgate? or a vintage guitar shop?
