Ratio of Guitar : Amp budget . What's your priority ?

My guitars are luxury items, a self-indulgence, much more expensive than they need to be.  I have 7 and only really need one, and although I'm fussy enough that that one would probably still be moderately expensive, I know that by shopping around and cutting some of the crap I could get one that would keep me pretty happy for less than a grand - maybe much less.

Amps on the other hand are utilitarian.  I want one that meets certain requirements for portability, loudness and tone but once those requirments are met I'm not really interested in paying lots extra for variety, kudos, aesthetics or cork-sniffery.

So I spend much less on amps, because I'm more rational about amps.
