I ran Avast for years and it used to be brilliant however it gradually became more and more bloated and intrusive.  I tried AVG and found it inflexible and prone to false positives.  I've used Defender since moving to WIndows 10 and whilst it may not be the best solution out there it certainly isn't the worst.

If you don't go to torrent sites and such then a mild AV like Bullguard works well and is only £20 a year ... you can try it for 30 days free and if you like it buy a license code. For £30 the same code will cover 3 machines

Windows defender will miss a lot of malware, the free Malwarebytes is actually pretty good

I don’t go on torrent sites, no. I was advised to just use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes free, and obviously be careful of what links and sites I visit!
