Lol - that feels like the guy responding wanted to type:

    sudo apt-get install my_whole_system_cos_I_am_a_cretin

But decided to remain helpful instead

See that's the great thing about linux, big intractable problem solved by two simple commands.

You of course have to KNOW the commands, which is usually the tricky bit!

If it runs like a dog, the problem may be its memory.
Is the disk light flashing all the time?

I’m not really familiar with Linux. Does it have an equivalent of Remote Desktop/RDP like Windows has? Could you remote in to the desktop from another PC? Or does the uninstall mean there is no GUI at all?
The fallback is the command line, which is also available over a network (though not relevant to this particular issue, as it's available anyway); the GUI is add-on functionality (effectively an application) on top of the base OS and there are different ones available for the various Linux releases.

(Incidentally, in the Windows world you can install Windows without a GUI too!)

That machine was built for editing video, it had the largest available memory at the time (which admittedly isn't the same as what you'd expect these days). Natch the disk light flashes when you start an application but settles down after a few seconds.

top tells me that compiz consumes most of the cpu, iotop told me what was causing disk traffic but the info didn't stick and I'd have to run it again to tell you. free gave me smaller numbers than it does on this pc at work, but I didn't see any reason to worry about them.

You could give Chrome OS a go, CloudReady does ISO Images.

OK - the thing that really kills Linux is if it runs out of memory and starts swapping, a symptom being the disk light flashing continuously.

But if that's not it, then on to the next point...

    Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Well, if the processor does 64-bit, that might be worth giving a go.
