    Thanks all for comments - much appreciated. I think it's helped to clarify things a bit and I think I can improve on the mixes if I'm not too heavy handed. Will also get a 2nd opinion form the mix engineer that I know and see what advice he offers once the tracking is all done.

    I listened to the track before reading the feedback you obtained in the thread and think that the issue with the mix is not so much a buildup in a frequency but that the percussion lack clarity and punch, and can be perceived as muddy because of that.

    If there isn't clarity and dynamics in the raw recording of the percussion in the first place, I think that you'd be hard-pressed to fix it. If you've got reverb and compression on them, it would help to back them off to allow the instrument to come through better.

    Thanks for the input. Yes, I think you may be right on this. I'll take another look at the drums and see what I can do to add a bit more clarity in that area.
