Why are "clean" boost/ pre driver pedals so expensive?

e.g. Mad Professor Simble pre driver, Xotic EP Boooster...................when you could use the volume on an EQ pedal to do the same thing?
Or am I missing the point?

You’re missing the point. Both above you mentioned, and good deal more, add a distinct “flavour”. You’re paying for their flavour, if you like it. If you need several dB of pure clean boost then yes an Eq pedal or such will do the job.

    Eh lpb1 39 quid.

They are not all expensive. However you pay more for flavour options build quality fancy paint point to point exchange rates etc.

Some of the marketing bullhonky is very expensive.

As dindude said - most clean boosts are not truly clean, and it's the slight EQ shifts or harmonic distortion which give them character and make people prefer one or another.

Ironically, a truly clean boost is not difficult or expensive to make, but will most likely be perceived as 'bland' or 'sterile' sounding. As mentioned elsewhere, a Boss LS-2 is (among many other things) an excellent truly clean boost, but you will see almost no-one using one for that.

Thanks to all for replies/suggestions. Bought an EP Booster today (for a very good price new) after trying it out with my Tumnus Deluxe and Euphoria pedals. Bliss!

It really is. I have one and find the tonal difference rather pleasing.

Yes.  Sounds like an EP booster for 15 quid, can’t fall off

I bought one, and it does indeed sound like an EP Booster.. The issue with mine is the horrible pop/bang made by using the switch.
