Staining a guitar fretboard not the frets.

What's the best way you find to stain a fretboard without getting any (or too much) on the frets?
And what's the best way to remove stain off frets?

No stain will work on the frets, so it can just be wiped off.

I like to use fiebings leather dye.  either black or dark brown.  it must be done on bare wood, so you may need to clean the  board with lighter fluid first and may need to oil again after.

It can stain some inlays,  but if you rub down with 0000 wire wool as soon as its dry they should come clean again.   Its a good idea to give the board a good rub down with the wire wool after the stain anyway.  This will remove the possibility of it coming off on your fingers later.

It's a kit guitar so there's no finish thankfully. I'm staining a dark Amber colour using crimson guitar stains.
Thanks so much for the advice wez I'm away from my guitar until Monday so can't wait to start. I will try fiebings at some point

No, but it should be easy to find some others online as it’s a well documented process... been used by factories for a very long time.
