Forces TV - RAF Museum Cosford

What's Hot
Interesting video on the restoration of old aircraft - some interesting stories. The museum is now taking on apprentices to learn the metal bashing skills required to maintain the planes. Only problem - they are all metric - the planes were made when Imperial was the norm .. 'hey chief .. how many millimetres in an eighth of an inch' .. :-)

Glad they are maintaining this old war birds.

  • I believe to preserve the Wellington they have had to re-skin it and lose the 1945 paint job.

So many very rare aircraft looked after there, lots of one offs especially from the battle of britain era.

  • Imperial measurement is still in the national curriculum - much to my annoyance!

Cosford is very unique, the hall with the prototypes, the Me-410, and topped off by the Cold War museum with all three V-Bombers!

Hendon is well worth a visit as well.

Have to look out for that show. Always interested in old 'planes.

Never been to Cosford although as mentioned the RAF museum at Hendon is a great day out.

If anyone's ever at Titusville in Fla USA, near KSC there is a wonderful museum there which restores older US aircraft. Had a lovely day there earlier this year.

This one actually flew at D-Day and is still flying.

I went to the RAF Museum when it was at Hendon as a boy in the air cadets.
Later, I joined the RAF, and the aircraft I worked on are now in museums (Shackleton and Buccaneer.)
    Feel old much?

We are blessed with some wonderful aviation museums. In recent years I have finally added Cosford, East Kirkby, Elvington, Kent BofB and Hendon, which along with Shuttleworth and Duxford are quite unique and a national asset. I have others to add like the DeHavilland Museum at Salisbury Hall and it's been many years since I went to Yeovilton Fleet air arm. I saw the video last night on me feed and enjoyed it.

Both the Shack and Bucc had long careers and earned their rest I think!

If you worked on Cold War types have you been to one of the Cold War Jets open days at Bruntingthorpe?  Fast taxis by Buccs, Lightings, Victor, Nimrod a VC10 etc!

  • I’ll watch this later. Been to Cosford many times (we go to the airshow each year and the non show days are a great ‘free’ day out with my kids).

The little story he told (about 2 mins) just reinforces how pointless war is.

    Great watch

Not done that yet, it's on the list. The smell of jet fumes would bring some memories back. :)

Love Cosford and take my boy at least once a year - living locally I've been most years since I was little too. Currently the Cold War exhibition is brilliant.

Also we played a corporate gig in one of the hangars a few years back. Very lengthy reverb trail after every song (to say the least).

Was waiting to go out last night standing on my driveway when a load Spitfire flew over quite low. Lovely noise .. :-)

  • It’s the Battle of Britain airshow at Duxford next weekend, 19 Spitfires and 5 Hurricanes in the flying display!

  • I live <2 miles from Hendon and our lunch was interrupted by a beautiful racket when a Lancaster buzzed the house.  I'd say it flew directly over nextdoor but one. :)
