@ICBM Is that the case for AC30s too?
Yes - although on the modern ones the loop itself is much better, fully buffered and at the right signal level, which will be an advantage for some effects.

Interesting. So, in an old AC30, without a loop, is the built-in vibrato also before the phase inverter?

@miserneil Sorry for the thread derail - congrats on the amp. I really want one of your Jrs!  :)

Yes. In almost any amp, everything other than the power valves is before the phase inverter. A PPIMV or tone 'Cut' is simply a passive control that reduces the signal (or treble) between the two.

The only 'major' ;) exception are some high-powered amps like the Marshall Major, Hiwatt 200/400 and Ampeg SVT where there is a booster stage after the phase inverter and before the power valves.

You greedy bugger @miserneil! Then again, the non-reverb version counts as a different amp - it's supposed to be more tonally 'pure', whatever that means...

    Ha!

Its actually VERY similar to the Reverb model, perhaps very slightly more direct sounding but it’s splitting hairs really - definitely something for TGP to pontificate over - I actually prefer the Reverb for playing at home but live, I’d say they’ll be identical.

There's a variety of options really; for smaller gigs, i'll have the head on the combo as a spare, for bigger gigs I will run the head and a cab along with the combo. I may also make a combo shell at some point and house the head in that.

    Yeah, it's pretty classy!

It doesn't help them running REALLY hot though but I suppose that's all part of the design...

I think every amp should do that. They're missing a trick there those brands that don't do it. I'd pay extra to some extent for that

I've got Oil City pickups going into my new guitar soon. They'll be different flavour to those of course but hope they'll sound just as good. Of course the amp is quite special too
