TC Fourescence Reverb problem.

Morning all, I have just bought a TC Fourescence reverb from Amazon, and having installed a very healthy battery, plugged it into my guitar and the effects loop of my solid state Marshall. all the cables work fine, ( and I've tried it in line between the guitar and amp main input) and all I can get from it is a very quiet ticking sound. When turned on, the led doesn't keep lit either. 
Is it just knackered, or am I missing something?
