Then: The Thin Lizzy 'Live & Dangerous' Duo of Brian Robertson & Scott Gorham but if I had to pick one, Scott Gorham.

  • When I started it was the likes of Brian May, EVH, Slash, Nuno and Paul Gilbert. I still love them but I’m more into my LP wranglers these days - John Sykes, Gary Moore, Doug Aldrich etc.,,

Very early on George Harrison but in may late teens in the late seventies Tony Iommi these I's say Johnny Winter and Rory Gallagher are neck and neck.
    Don't touch that dial.

So what we've established so far is the younger of those amongst us haven't changed, and the more (ahem) mature, no longer fit into their spandex.

  • I was first inspired to pick up guitar by guys like Joe Strummer, Steve Jones, Hugh Cornwell, Johnny Ramone....but then I chanced upon Stevie Ray Vaughan and everything changed.

I still haven't found anyone I enjoy listening to more than Stevie, to be honest, but I'm forever grateful to him for his music and for it guiding me to all the blues greats past and present.

@Schnozz - Chris Holmes was awesome. He always had is own legato style too. Did you catch him this yr on tour?

    For me,

    Then: EVH

Now: Mike landau (subject to changing my mind)
    @newi123 ;;;;

I did! The WASP songs were a nostalgia trip. His original influence was obviously Iommi, as things went serious when he covered 'War Pigs' at the end there. He stayed behind with his wife until all the fans had gone home too, so I got him to sign a couple of pickguards for me (so much for 'Mean Man', but it may have been so back in the 80s)

As a teen it was: Jonny Greenwood, Steve Craddock and Bernard Butler, choices very much of their era but they got me into playing.

    Now:
Bryce and Aaron Dessnor, Brad Barr, Nels Cline and Richard Thompson. I guess I got a bit more eclectic and went a bit further down the hole Jonny Greenwood started me on!

  • Then- Tony Iommi.
    Now- Robin Guthrie.

My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

  • Then:  James Hetfield of Metallica, and a little later Ty Tabor of King’s X. I was very much a rhythm player early on, it took me a while to start playing any lead, and even now I’m still happiest doing rhythm and melody.

Now:  Difficult to choose one … maybe Piotr Grudziński of Riverside? Piotr wasn’t a flashy player, but there’s some great stuff in their music. He died a couple of years ago, and while the new Riverside material still sounds good it won’t be the same without Piotr … oh, and I still love Ty Tabor

So, not a huge journey for me - still love my metal
