Upright electric bass kit?

The bass player in my band is developing back and shoulder issues and has asked me about upright electric basses. I think this would be a good solution but they really want a fretted one - so let’s call it an electric bass viol! 

Anybody aware of a kit for an upright electric bass? Anyone know what would be involved in modding one to take frets? I’m assuming less radius on the fingerboard. What scale? 

Anyone know anything? 

As as much as anything else it would get me into the current challenge!

Have you seen Barker Basses?   I think Lee has retired now,  but they are a relatively easy project as they use all standard bass parts

The first Gibson EB-1 basses came with a telescopic end pin that you could attach to play it upright.
