Goldtops?

I’m tempted to get a Les Paul gold top in the near future. Any thoughts about good models and years?

No particular budget but let’s say under 3k.  It's to use live so conidtion isnt important if it plays right.  I prefer slimmer necks but can live most gibson profiles apart from thr really fat necks.  

On my list are the old late 80s/ early 90s classics so i might come across one of those going cheap and maybe an older early 70s model but that might mean upping the budget?

Aside from those 2 options how do the various Ri models conpare with just finding a standard or traditional for a good price?

You’re budget would easily find you a nice used R7 and have change leftover, however it’s going to have a big neck. Looking for a Classic, or a Traditional with a 60’s neck is a better bet.

Don’t rule out 2012 LP Tradtitional Gold Tops and have some money left to put a set of OX4 pickups in

Mine is a 2006 Standard P90 limited edition / short run / whatever Gibson called them. (Took me years to persuade the previous owner to part with it. Eight years back.) The neck profile is similar to the 57 Historic owned by a local character rather than clubby like some Studio models.

The only changes I have made are a hotter bridge/Treble position pickup and combatting the corrosion caused by the previous owner's sweat.

Yes I’m looking for humbuckers or mini hums if I end up with an old deluxe or similar.     Those 2018 classics would be worth a look if they didn’t have p90s.

What are the necks like on the traditional models or does it vary by year in typical Gibson daftness.

Provided that the Classic has the necessary metal bits in the pickup cavities, Gibson mini humbuckers will directly retrofit. 

Several pickup manufacturers offer some of their best-known regular humbuckers in P90-sized housings. In some cases, the reduced coil spacing causes a corresponding reduction in the length of string that each pickup senses. Only you can decide whether this compromise is worthwhile to avoid cutting into the top of an instrument.

I have a hunch that only a straightforward Les Paul with regular humbuckers will be acceptable.

The 2012 Trads have a chunky 58 deep C and not a D a good handful without being excessive

You’re right and if I went for a new guitar that would fit the description perfectly but I’m thinking about something with a bit more character so probably interested in used models and comparing specs.  Putting aside the signature aspect the Joe B model looks interesting.  I should really get around to trying an R7 to see if the necks are definitely too big while I’m keeping an eye out for interesting GT’s
