  • Later used to be much more varied. I remember I always used to tune in because there'd always be at least one band I like - even if it wasn't the Senegal Tombonists, Strange Witchy Girl Screaching, or Fecking Awful Indie Band With Every Guitarist Having a Tiny Keyboard.

But the last few years it feels like the same show over and over. It's been a long time since I've looked at the set list and then felt the need to tune in. Got close this evening "oh Joe Bonomassa" then remembered it's several years since I listened to any of my Bonamassa albums.

I don't think the show is anywhere near as varied as it thinks it is. They should rename it Jo Whiley's iPod. Or Guardian Dinner Party Soundtrack.
I think the 'narrowing' scope of the bands and artists featured on the show is probably a reflection of a growingly conservative music industry. I think the extent to which 'alternative' culture and lifestyles have been commercialised over the last 20 years has also had the effect of stifling the emergence of new and exciting movements and bands..... anything that appears new is quickly commodified and is in an ad campaign within months. Even more worryingly, many young artists and bands appear to be careerist, entrepreneurial, capitalists. The myth that sales or social media popularity equates to success and achievement seems to have firmly established its self (I had an argument with some one the other day who proposed that the Manics had to be a good band because they'd sold loads of records and lots of people like then!!!)

Conversely its interesting to note that many grime artists (Skepta, Stormzy) have attempted to establish themselves independently of major record labels....

Aside from all that I do think Jools Holland is comparatively varied....

I still watch it, tonight's was ok despite the relatively middle of the road stuff.

If it were to go, I'd prefer to see some of the 6music team do something. Maybe Steve Lamacq or Shaun Keaveny (Now that he doesn't have to get up early!) can inject some much needed charisma and some newer talent.
With Keaveny it could also be genuinely funny if he could adapt his style for TV.

I have tickets for the recording of next weeks show which I am looking forward to. Personally I wish the tickets had been for this week as Bonamassa and Weller were on.

I never watch it live - I record it, so when I do watch it I can fast forward through the rubbish and just see the good stuff.

Although sometimes this entails fast forwarding the whole programme.

Sweet Jesus, save me from Keaveney on TV. Can't wait for the smug, dull one to vanish from the breakfast airwaves...

I've watched Jools over the years but it has always had a strong anti-heavy rock/metal bias (which is driven by the prodcuers) and it has never really been one for cutting edge bands.

Oh so very true.  I shouldn't think Jools himself is a big fan either.

True. Though we used to get a few, years ago. Nothing now.

It's such a shame. I see many interesting rock bands touring in the UK from Europe and think it'd be nice to see them on Later, but it never happens. Not only does the show not like rock, it's outlook is more transatlantic.

∆ Not sure I entirely agree with that. I've seen Metallica, Alice in Chains, Wolf Alice, Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro on there in recent times. Idles were on just last week!

I was thinking of Rival Sons although looking it up that was 4 years ago.

I suspect fans of many genres could say similar things - country doesn’t get much of a look in for example. I also suspect heavy rock bands haven’t been the easiest to have on a format that tends to reward bands that travel light. JoBo had the full set up this week ( I think) but when he first appeared had to do so in a stripped down way.

I’d agree with @Reverend. ;Metallica were last on Jools about 10 years ago, not sure I’d consider that “recent”. Idles are punk rather than heavy rock/metal. The last metallers I can remember on there were Mastodon. Lost count of the number of grime acts and Americana artists we’ve had though.

  • I always thought that the harder / heavier bands weren’t really given the opportunity to open up and go for it on Later; like they were hobbled by noise limits or the way the studio ran they just didn’t seem to work that well.

I cant recall a loud band I’ve liked on there apart from At the Drive In (I think) who just went nuts :)

The other performance that sticks in my mind is the first time Ray Lamontagne was on. Amazing.

In fact those two are the only ones I can really remember clearly after decades of watching.

Well I'm no Bonamassa fan and I'm bored to death of Paul Weller always being on, but...
I thought they were both great tonight.

    Deal with it!

  • I can honestly say this was the first time I've turned on Jools since that shitty New Year's thing going into 2010 where Annie Lennox sang pissed. Saw it was on the TV guide, just finished watching the F1, didn't know who was on, thought I'd give it a go.

I gave up by the Sigrid interview.

I think, sad as it is given it’s live music and all. It’s well past it’s sell by date.

I remember when it first started most weeks fhere’d be a new or exciting act.

Now It’s just so Islington, a very Ersatz version of world music, of rap, of rock etc.

Last act that was really out of the blue was for me Sigrid when she sang before everyone had heard of her and blew everyone else away.

All too too infrequent now and too many mates of Jules
