WTB high gain pedal

Matt_McGMatt_McG Frets: 328
As the title says. Something that will get me to modded plexi, shreddy levels of gain (or can do if boosted).

Needs to be have a fairly tight low end (nothing too flabby/loose) and should either not have very scooped mids (or should have eq options to vary mids).

I have tried: Suhr Riot, Bogner Burnley, BE-OD, Rats, Dirty Little Secret etc

I like Rats and the BE-OD but the BE is a bit too scooped.

The goal is smooth fusiony lead, not metal chug.

I say it a lot, but the Zoom Hyper Lead is right for this application. Sweepable mid, plus bass and treble controls, and a nicely wide range of dirt.

  • Maybe no use to you now but a DLS and a Naga Viper gets that modded Plexi sound.

I have Rats, sorry. Like the tone, too. But looking for something else in the high gain range.

@Paul_C I’ve never tried a metal zone, can you actually get a decent high gain smooth-ish lead tone?  Plus side, cheap, easy to mod (Keeley/Fromel/Monty Allums etc)

    High gain smooth lead tone?

    Sobbat DB-1.

I have one but it's not for sale, however I can highly recommend them. Sounds great with SC's or HB's.

Fat, smooth and sustaining with powerful EQ controls. I've got a lot of OD's and Fuzz pedals, but this is the only distortion pedal I bother with. I usually use the amps distortion.

Boss MD-2 is often overlooked here.
YouTube vids of it are dominated by metal chuggers(!) probably because of the pedal's name: "Mega-Distortion"
But I first heard one being used live at a local gig -- the guitarist dialled in everything for smooth high gain legato, and back to classic rock leads.
Interesting pedal, I got one second hand, all I'd say is you have to make the amp work to avoid losing yourself in the mix.

I confess I don't know - I suggested it mostly because of its EQ.

  • I'm not the seller but this should do it:

I have two Weehbos: The Bastard and the JCM Drive Anniversary LTD (1st run). These two pedals ended my search for a properly high gain box and an MIAB. The JVM would cover a lot of the same ground as those two pedals. For reference, when I say high gain, I replaced a Wampler Sovereign with The Bastard because the Sov wasn't enough. The Bastard can do everything the Sov could do and far more...... mild Marshall breakup to MoP type brutal. All Weehbos have a very powerful active EQ section. I'm a happy camper with mine.

    Assuming clean channel as base - Carl Martin Plexitone ; Bogner Blue or Plexi ;

if some of your issues are with bottom end - consider an graphic eq pedal  or parametric ?
I trim some low end depending on guitar and od/ distortion in play ..

mooer cruncher n eq is much better than it should be as an example

I have a Wampler triple wreck clone which is very well made
Has a vintage/Modern switch to go between classic / hard rock,to completely off the chart.
also has Bass,Mid,Treble, for tone shaping options.
