Canicross. Anyone do it/tried it?

What's Hot
This is cross country/trail running with your dog.
Races usually about 5k.
Tried it today training our collie, Stan.
My  God it's like flat out interval training!
Up hill and down Dale dog has no respect just pulls like a train trying to keep up with other dogs. Crazy fun

Sounds like a good laugh and ideal for dogs that need lots of exercise/stimulation.

We lost our boy at 14 last year. Being a greyhound he’d have led the Canicross for the first 800m or so before stopping and sleeping.  =)

Love the idea of a fast greyhound, well at least for the first few yards.
Sorry to hear you lost him recently.
Our collie is full of beans, not too intelligent,  but enthusiastic.

  • I’ve got a couple of mates who do it, they have special bungee harnesses etc. They said it’s great fun too.
They competed at the European Championships a year or two ago, the guy who won it was apparently the Belgian national 5000m champion (without a dog) so he was RAPID!

It seems an excellent way to tire a Collie out!

  • I want to give this a go so I can get fitter and exercise the dog at the same time. My dog does agility at the moment which is easier for me as I only have to run for 30 seconds or so, while she has to do all the jumps and obstacles.

Know a few runners that do this with their dogs.  One thing to bear in mind is that alot of time is spent trying to hold the dog back so tend to land on your heels out in front of your body to brake/slow down. Can cause alot of problems with knees/hips.

This is especially true when they see squirrels haha

Apart from that looks great fun for dog and owner. :)

Stan does struggle with the concept of slow, even flying down the side of a large sand dune

If I did that with my spaniels it would be 5k for me and 20k for the dogs. And they would still be going at the end.

  • If I was remotely fit enough, I'd love to do that with our Coco.

Of course, she's an Akita, so I could probably just grab a pair of skates and let her do the work, she'd barely notice. We'd run a totally different course to everyone else, and would probably end up five miles away from the finish line, but...I'm sure it'd be fun.

Great name for a Collie :) We don't have a dog but it sounds like it's great fun.
