Could I replace the chorus on my board with an Electric Mistress type flanger? Specifically the Mooer one because that's all that will fit.

The chorus is for Smiths/Cure type sounds, and I guess what I'm asking is if that sort of flanger can do that. Interested in 17 Seconds type sounds; absolutely not interested in jet plane / that Rush song that St Etienne sampled kind of sounds.

Like, could it handle the more chorusy Smiths side of things too as a sort of general postpunkuliser?

Lots of recommendations for the Mooer ElecLady in this thread http://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/143134/what-is-the-best-cheap-flanger#latest

But if you can squeeze a bit space on the board, and can find one on Ebay for about £60, and can power it, I'd recommend the Boss HF-2 Hi-Band Flanger - a far less extreme flanger that really works beautifully for the sounds you've described.

The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

The Donner Jet Convolution is only £22 on ebay new. I know it has jet in the name, but it is supposed to an exact clone of the Mooer Eleclady (a clone of a clone). I've got one and it can be pretty subtle with range and 'color' backed right off.

  • Well, Smith used an Electric Mistress back in the early 80s (you can definitely hear it on the Pornography album), along with an MXR M117 and, later, a Boss BF-2. The Eleclady et al will be perfect for those earlier sounds, though as Smith also used a JC120 amp, you may well find that you need a chorus to go after the flanger for complete authenticity. But for now, it would be ideal.

Because the EM/EL is very much on the chorus end of the flanger spectrum, it would be great for doing chorus sounds as well.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....
