NGD x 2! My separation presents to myself =)

Long story short: Split up with the wife about 6 months ago (just after I won a ThorpyFX pedal in a raffle here, so it was up and down :) ), moved into my flat about 2 months ago and completed the house sale about 1 month ago. Went to PMT today to test drive a Gretsch Streamliner G2622T in Torino I'd been eyeing up for a while, and also to try a few Les Pauls ahead of Black Friday. I didn't even end up looking at Les Pauls, because I tried a PRS S2 Standard 24 instead.

Ahem...

Ahem ahem..

Oh, and I grabbed a Helix and a couple of Yamaha HS7s as well lol.

I never, ever thought I'd buy a PRS. I've always found them too blingy and never really desired one apart from a seafoam green Starla, but I played this one and had to have it. Its a really high quality bit of kit with none of the overly-perfect and polished looks that put me off, yet it's far from ugly.

With the Gretsch, looks-wise the Streamliner in Torino green is just about perfect to my eye but I didn't think I'd get on with the sound or playing with a Bigbsy. Turns out it plays like a dream and it sounds great too.

Didn't even have to sneak them past a wife either :D

    Fair play dude!

I did exactly the same after my split about 4 years ago! I went out and bought gear i'd always wanted and i didn't have to explain it to anyone, it was fucking brilliant. Hope this new gear inspires you and gives you many hours of pleasure.

I don't have a "type" when it comes to guitars, I've never seen the point in having 5 slightly different Les Pauls for example. I try to buy with my ears and fingers which is why I have the PRS now but I for sure buy with my eyes too. It was more by luck then judgement that the Gretsch plays and sounds great, in truth I'd have probably bought it regardless lol. It reminds me of the Chris Cornell signature 335 which is the guitar I have lusted over continuously ever since I first saw it but will never own. Even if I could afford it I'd never find one. Gibson did a custom shop 335 in olive drab but even that was mega money and it had regular buckers.

I don't have a sorted tele in my collection either... :D

The split has been relatively easy, good natured for the most part and there's no arguments over money or our daughter. We still get on really well and nobody did the dirty.

I'm slowly getting used to being single, but we were together for 18 years so it's gonna take a while lol.

I'm really, really starting to fall in love with the PRS. This thing is the most comfortable, versatile and well made guitar I've ever owned. It might even be the nicest guitar I've ever played.

Seriously impressed. It just oozes quality, it sounds amazing and it sustains forever.

  • Sounds like a similar journey to my recent one. I've started to realise and appreciate the same things with my Custom 24. They're amazingly well built instruments.

Probably a better pair to play with than your ex had =) Hell, you can have my missus for that PRS! I'm with you on their typical bling factor, but that guitar looks like an understated gent. Very cool.
