I have an old Aria Pro II similar to this

Which has been sat in my loft for ages.

Originally the body was a horrible poly clownburst which I have sanded off but the neck is still painted and I don't fancy sanding it all off.

Will paint stripper work?

Most likely (almost definitely) not... even the really aggressive stuff thats not sold in the shops won’t shift a 2k poly finish. I’ve actually started farming stripping out to a local company who specialise in it and the boss there reckons he has something that will remove a chemically cured modern finish but I haven’t taken him up on it yet. Still a little wary.

for a neck like this your only option is sanding really. Not something I would do for the risk of damaging the carve and contours. Also would take a very long time!

    fair enough :(

I might just paint over it!

  • I would recommend stripping it first as the build up of paint and finish may make is 'sticky' to play and the finish could be aesthetically unpleasant.
Just take your time with some rough sandpaper or carefully with a razor blade to scrape it off

    Yeah, I'd go sanding/scraping.

  • For a neck, I find sanding usually works.  Not always, but usually the coatings on the neck are lighter than on the bodies.

  • A heat gun, maybe?

I've used a heat gun but only to gently soften the poly before scraping then sanding, be careful of any plastic binding if using this method.
