Unfortunately it isn’t that funny. Outside disease is the exact problem - there’s a possibility he was carrying an illness which is trivial to westerners but could be fatal to the entire tribe - even worse than Christianity.

It's also the perfect reason to avoid isolation in principal. St Kilda of the north coast of Scotland was evacuated because a very small gene pool was leading to disease and congenital deficiencies.
