Alternative to EVH 5150

My son is eying up one of these for Christmas. 

I'm not sure he's ready for boutique pedals costing almost £200 - or at least that's what I'm trying to convice him!!

What lower budget alternatives will get in the ballpark?  I'm just not au fait with any high gain stuff.

PS really hoping that one of the joyo ones is the right answer

Something like the Mooer Solo or Cruncher might do the trick.

theres plenty of good high gainers for not much outlay, in my experience, the best one is the humble Rat2.

Half the price n may still have some credibility with him ?

cruncher ; joyo  riot clone or other hot rodded  jcm 800 types  might work 

otherwise 5150 s going around £100 s/h but that’s not possibly acceptable at Xmas ?

Metal Muff definitely springs to mind...if your son is a YouTube watcher then Rob Chapman picked it as a fave in a metal pedal shootout on Andertons TV.

I own one and I think it sounds great with a little bit of dialing in. Some people don't get on with them but for metal or rock, on a lower budget, it's about the best there is.

I'd 2nd the AMT P2, used to have one, very good pedal and recreation of the 5150 sound.
