Fake coal/wood gas fires

What's Hot
Would they be more/less efficient with increased amounts of fake wood/coal?

  • I don't know, but i had a cast iron box that looked well old and burning coal except that it was a 6kW LPG burner and all I had to do was leave it on for an hour with the lounge door open and it would heat the whole house.
IMO the efficiency comes with (i) not letting too much heat out of the flue (ii) being able to heat up the cast iron housing so that it radiates heat - I don't think the fake wood/coal makes a lot of difference because it doesn't store a lot of heat.

Correct me if I'm wrong :)

  • I dunno either. My previous house had a brilliant wood burning stove...my current abode has a cast iron gas burner that looks like a wood burning stove.

We were told not to put too much of the fake coal on ours. It interferes with the burner process supposedly, could cause toxic fumes from unburnt gas.
