  • @rivercider your post made me go check mine as I also have bad tinnitus. But on doing so I realised mine isn't age-related ... but the story of how I got it is a salutory warning to headphones users.

@Phil_aka_Pip Actually the same for me - it's not been strictly age related with me either and involved some headphones and a Yamaha THR10X  :'(
But it just seemed to fit into the thread as something that many people here may be more likely to get as they age, with their hobby/profession being music too....

Interestingly, the consultant in the hospital told me not to blame myself and that it was probably just a coincidence that the onset of mine came so soon (72 hrs) after the headphone thing, but I'm confident the THR did it.  Wasn't even super loud or that prolonged, but with hindsight I'm able to easily offer this advice, without trying to sound like a health & safety rep - don't risk your hearing.  The tinnitus thing can drive people to take their own lives, it can be that severe for those unable to learn to cope with it, but it can often be avoided by taking simple precautions.  prevention is better than cure, for there IS no cure with tinnitus. On the plus side, I guess if you can habituate to it in time, as I'm trying to do, it's better than lots of the other things people here have mentioned (stroke, heart issues etc) so I'm grateful for that, at least!  =)

I WILL NOT go into a "care home". The only way I will leave my own home is feet first, wearing a wooden overcoat. I would rather die at home after 6 months than eke out another 6 years in some council-run gulag while dribbling in front of daytime tv.
They get Ladies in there you know............just sayin'
They do yes. Sadly many of them, and indeed the men, need hoisting - literally being placed in a sling and lifted on a small crane - to be pressure-relieved and given what is euphemistically called "personal care" or in less expensive care homes "toileting". How a man can continue to carry on as a Lothario in such circumstances is beyond me.

The reality for me is that care homes are deeply unpleasant and humiliating places. My MiL has been in one for about 5 years now and that has made my mind up about "taking the easy way out" before I have to go in one.

The sword of time will pierce our skin
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it burn

That game of life is hard to play
    I'm gonna lose it anyway

The only rational outlook on getting old is that it sucks. (Just out of back surgery, which also sucks). However the alternatives don't look to good from where I'm sat either. So might as well try and play, look as good as I can and try and slow it down a bit. A decent gig and a fast car is adequate compensation. (Thousands of seriously expensive Latin American hookers helps obviously). Get old or die. That's what's the deal were dealing in....

Oh, and every time I look in a mirror or see a reflection in a shop window I wonder what on earth my Dad’s doing here.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

I'm 48 and developed gout over the last couple of years. Tried to sort it through diet and exercise to no avail. Bit the bullet recently and now take Allopurinol daily so that's that sorted.

    Tinnitus is a bit annoying.

Elbow pain is a bit irritating too.

I do consider myself pretty lucky though.

They did it wrong, then (or it was different to what I had) - I've had one of those, and whilst it's not an experience I have any desire to repeat, once it was done it was fine. Worst bit was because I hadn't read the destructions, so was a bit taken aback when they said "This will be uncomfortable, we're going to fill up your bladder backwards, and then do a flow test afterwards".  Lying there thinking: "a) my cock's out b) not in circumstances to be remotely impressive c) if you don't stop pumping water in soon I'm actually going to either burst or piss myself, and you wasn't a barrel of laughs.

  • At 46 I can finally tie my nuts round my thighs.... just not for the reasons I'd like to.

Arthritis is a constant pain ( pun intended). I've all but quit guitar playing.

Hair is appearing where it shouldn't and I'm resembling my grandfather.

At least my brain says I'm 15

I’m a 71’ model, so for those not good at maths that makes me 47....Apart from having my Wisdom teeth out and a Hernia op at 40, I’m fecking fantastic....couple of grey hairs, no viagra needed, no medication, no fillings, no glasses, I can still see my bits when I look down standing up,...yep I feel like I’m 18 pretty much most of the time..... Strange thing is, I’ve had a lucky life really, but here’s the rub.......I know I’ve got all the shit stuff to come....Parents passing, Friends passing, Age eventually catching up with me......30 years of working outside, mostly on Dartmoor doesn’t come for free health wise. I’ve got 2 great kids, I’ve been with my Wife for 29 years and she doesn’t piss me off (yet)..... Yep I’m basically Peter Pan and I don’t want to grow old.....

When I was first ’stented’ it felt like I was pissing broken glass.  Then followed 6 weeks of feeling as though I needed to pee 24 / 7 and waking up at least 3 times a night drenched in sweat.  When they took it out it was as though the Consultant had clicked his fingers an I was cured. The next day I was out running again and I had my life back.

My one regret.  When I shook hands with the Consultant following the procedure - I should have said, “I’m not touching that, I know where it’s been”.  But I missed my chance and I hope I never get another one.

The trick is to keep moving, my father in law is 82, still gardens for people, always sawing and chopping logs for the fire, walks everywhere, he’s always been a compulsive mover, all his friends are dead and gone, most within 10 yrs if retiring and then doing nothing with themselves. It’s a lesson for all of us to take on board.

Spot on! There’s a neighbour of mine who’s 75. He walks, cycles, goes to the gym, gardens, etc. He’s mentally sharp and probably fitter than most 50 year olds.
