I don't think it was made within 1,000 miles of the Gibson factory.

Yeah, but 'old mahogany = TONE' :)
If that's what it is.  Hell, for that price it must be, right? lol

  • I don't get the control layout, or lack of binding.  I think they're telling porkies...

Seller is adamant that you buy it and FIIIIRRREE it up. Is that code for half a gallon of petrol and a match?

I think they're trying to imply it's a '59, which would be the only way to justify that sort of price - although if so I'm surprised they don't mention it. The control layout would be correct for that, and the lack of binding would be because the neck has been shaved down to 41mm.

I'm not enough of an expert on these to be sure, but I think it *could* be - the main thing that makes me think so is the truss rod access cavity, which looks correct - including the position slightly further down the headstock than modern ones. @miserneil might have a better idea.

Fair dos, maybe I’ve been hasty in my assumptions that it’s an overpriced POS. I have to be honest that I’ve never seen that switching layout before but after a bit of internet research it does seem to fit the 59 suggestion.

Still, after that much dicking around, even if it is a genuine 59 LPS, I’d be amazed if it fetched that kind of money.

Well, it is in Music Outlet Shop so you have a good reason for that hasty assumption :).

Even if it's a genuine 59 Special, which is what it looks like, it's still an overpriced PoS.

Thanks for the tag @ICBM. Once upon a time that was a late ‘58/very early ‘59 Special going by the pickup routes and the body radius (highly likely this has been sharpened by over zealous sanding though), earlier switch position, but it’s had a LOT of work....lots of over sanding, especially around the headstock and who knows what’s underneath that gold...@ICBM is right, the binding was lost when the neck was narrowed. It’s a basket case. £500 would be more the ballpark.

Strange how none of the photographs gives a clear shot of the traditional headstock break region ... and the entire finish on the back of the neck is opaque.

That’ll be hiding a heel break and probably a headstock break too. The heels were NOTORIOUS for breaking in these V1 Specials as there’s barely 10mm of wood holding the neck on, Gibson even recalled some as well as fixing them on warranty and then moved the neck P90 to V2 in mid ‘59, an inch back from the end of the neck to give it more of a chance.

Neither are huge problems if fixed correctly but at almost £3k....no ta...

Some say that the seller's aim in posting these ridiculously priced items (he's got a 60's Rickenbacker guitar carcass with the fingerboard stripped off, as well) is click-bait.

Me, I wish ebay had a facility to block sellers!
