If some dude says cash on pick up and i say i can't pick up and he says he'll pack for postage and will take bank transfer......does that leave me with no PayPal comfort blanket if anything goes tits up, or scam even?

No paypal protection and possibly a scam.

You are not covered if you do a bank transfer - if you are in any doubt don't do it unless you can take losing the cash

Could be a scam but might also just be a seller who wants to protect himself from a PayPal scam. Problem is there’s no way to know so not worth the risk imo.

I think his original request ‘cash on pick up’  implies honesty.
At the very least, he’s saying he has the item in question.
