I'm planning on turning my Mex Tele in a 'Menace' of the Dennis variety.

I've no clue as to building stuff, painting, and am as practical as a blunt spoon. BUT, I'm up for a project and would like to ask for some tips before I begin.

If you can offer some hard earned advice I'd be most grateful.
I'll be doing a photo log for the journey.

Thanks.

Red meat and functional mushrooms.
Persistent and inconsistent guitar player.
A lefty, hence a fog of permanent frustration

Not enough guitars, pedals, and cricket bats.

  • Take photos of things you think you might struggle to put back together... other than that, I don't really have any tips apart from don't scrimp on the sanding, get it as smooth and flat as you can before you start painting... and then when you're painting, take your time: several thin coats, so that you don't get runs or drips
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

Red and black stripes with a Denis the Menace graphic.
Only a bridge PuP, a hot tele style. I may extend it to the headstock if it works....

  • If it's poly (which I'd assume it is)..
Take the neck off, and remove all the hardware from the body, taking photos as necessary- especially as you'll be unsoldering wiring.
Use a hot air gun to soften the finish & use a rounded pallet knife to lift it away.
Sand to wood, then refinish & rebuild.

Take your time, you'll be fine. I managed & I'm not

Only thing I have to say is.... preparation.

When you think it's about right to go then keep going.

The amount of times I've bugged up because I've not prepared enough is countless!

  • As you disassemble the guitar take lots of pictures and measurements. Be sure to put everything in a box as you remove it, it’s a good idea to put small parts like screws in an envelope marked with where they came from.
