Recommendations for a refin

What's Hot
Hi guys,

I’m new on here and am looking for recommendations you may have for a refinish or paint specialist.

Bit of background: I made the decision to buy two new guitars as an alternative to a guestbook for my wedding at the end of last year, and found a factory blemished Jackson Minion Dinky and an Ibanez Mikro bass going for a bargain price.

Fast forward to now, the guitar bodies are both nicely autographed with sharpie by my guests, and I’m looking into sealing them up with a clear coat. Doesn’t have to be a pro job at all, just to ensure the sharpie ink doesn’t dry and flake off over time. I don’t trust myself with a rattle can, so would appreciate any insights you guys have.

Cheers in advance!

There are a number of painters/finishers on here. @rexter is on London I think. I know you have doubts but I sprayed a guitar with cans and used Halfords poly in can to finish. Pretty hard to screw up too bad.

  • Many thanks for the quick response, I’ll reach out to @rexter and see how I get on.

  • I'd guess that any sort of preparation you'll need to do to the surface will take away the autographs...

Very good point, appreciated! Maintaining the autographs is my main concern. I’m coming round to thinking it may be best to do a ‘rough’ job with a can of poly myself just to seal it.

You may find the solvent in any clear will just dissolve the sharpie tbh!!!

The ideal clearcoat is probably 2k because you can spray it with no thinners, even thinned for a flowcoat it's 5-10% thinners only. Might get away with nitro by being very careful to mist on the first coats very lightly, repeat & build, and still be careful with the wet coat so's not to flood it - acrylic and nitro being about 50% thinners to spray.

  • Update -

Thanks all for your responses. I've finally got round to doing this, opted for a can of clearcoat and sprayed them myself. Success!
