If Pantera are getting a mention, Down must surely.

Bury Me In Smoke, Open Coffins?

If we're talking doom/stoner then I love the tone on this album. Heavy and thick but has definition and doesn't sound muddy.

Essential early 90s heaviness. Like djent, but with riffs.

Melodic and catchy but as heavy as Sunn live.

Great shout, Torche are fantastic! I'm going to see Sunn again in a few weeks, they have a new album out soon produced by Steve Albini

Death are worth a mention: Heavy, articulate, varied and good use of temp changes.

For all the shit it gets, nu metal had some great guitar tones imo. I still want a Mesa thanks to the dirty tone in this. It just sounds huge, fat and filthy. 1:25 ISH

Always loved the tone in Slipknot too

With The Dead. For maximum sludge.

Carcass. I remember seeing this on Raw Power (remember that?) aged 14 and being utterly blown away by it

    Torche: Heavy but happy

Not meant as a criticism of the music, but stuff like this doesn't really sound that heavy to me, more thrashy.

For me this is heavy tonez, really kicks in at 2.15.

Confessor are one of two bands that have a decent sound from mesa. It has thrash elements but also a heavy trouble vibe, as can be seen with their Trouble covers.
I've seen wizard many times. I was at their first ever gig and was trading tapes with Jus back in the Lord of putrefaction days. They were at their heaviest with Greaves drumming - before his stroke he was an animal on drums.

  • I still think Pantera are up there with some of the most brutal, aggressive and heavy tones. That super tight high gain tone mixed with bouncy riffs and the right amount of space between the notes/drums....it just works. It's almost got a groove to it and that is what makes it so heavy.

    More modern bands:

Converge (very mid focused aggressive guitar, punk attitude, low thick bass, incredibly drumming)
Fall Silent (just horrible hardcore....I love it)

Drums and bass have a huge impact on what sounds heavy. Mix that with an aggressive vocalist and it's a recipe for an aggressive song.
