As a boost into an amp or ODs

As a boost into an OD it imparts such a change of tone.....how come it's so popular?

Surely the last thing you want when you are boosting your OD for a solo is a vast change in tone...right?

A mid boost that allows your solo to cut through the band is bloody useful. Just going louder doesn’t have the same result.

Not necessarily, depends what you’re boosting. Most people prefer a rhythm tone with a bit less mids, compression and volume than their lead tone. 808’s, TS9’s etc boost mids, volume and compression so they’re ideal if that’s what they want. Some people want their rhythm tone but just louder for solos, which is what clean boosts and boosts placed in fx loops do. Besides, if you’re boosting a cranked valve amp, whatever you use is going to change the tone to some degree because you’re making the amp compress, which changes the sound.
