SG Re-Repair

A work colleague’s son ended up with a dead SG many years ago...and with the folly of youth, a friend of his attempted a repair.

As you can see, it wasn’t pretty and didn’t last long...

They asked me if I could take a look at it and brought it in to work today.

When I got home, some careful use of steam and dental tools meant I managed to remove the old glue.

A quick mating test of the split surfaces looks like it will go back together pretty well.

I’ll leave it to dry out overnight and if I have time tomorrow evening, I’ll think about glueing and clamping.

Good luck with the repair I had a 70’s SG with a much worse break and once repaired it was a great guitar.

Crikey! Actually doesn't look *too* horrendous with the glue removed, but still not fun! 

Mind you most people I know in the real world think I'm nuts for enjoying building pedals and amps, so what do I know?

You’ll need to splint that. The break is a fairly short one anyway, and with the old glue contaminating the surfaces - no matter how clean you’ve got it - it will never be strong enough otherwise.

If you’re careful and patient you can do it with chisels, you don't need a routing jig.

Yeah, I did begin to wonder...

The first step before splinting is to glue the break anyway though, so you need to do that first. You can assess how strong you think it is after that.

If it was me I would use high-strength epoxy, rather than anything water-based which might be repelled by traces of the old glue. Heat the joint with a hairdryer first and for quite a while after clamping it - that makes the glue thin and penetrate into the surfaces better.

And clamp it like you’re trying to crush the life out of it...

Hmmmm...I’ll have a nose in the workshop later, but I think all I have “on the shelf” is the domestic quick-setting stuff.

@ICBM. Care to suggest a preferred slow-setting high-strength epoxy?

Incidentally (for no other reason than an FYI), by the way it peeled, I think the original glue was a basic PVA wood adhesive.

I thought he spent every waking moment hunting down odd guitars and amps.

Definitely splint it with a hard wood fillet or two. It'll make it a lot more solid than before.

Just a quick question - may be for @ICBM, @FelineGuitars, @WezV, @SteveRobinson, etc...

A while ago, for certain guitar repairs, I recall someone recommending an epoxy resin (slow cure/high-strength) which is used for construction/repair of golf clubs(?!) due to it's high-impact/high shear-strength. It was also supposed to be reasonably priced (as opposed to West System, etc). Does this ring any bells?

Yes, that looks ideal. I've used standard high-strength 'original' Araldite in the past, but it seems to be getting harder to find.

Stay well away from any quick-set epoxy, it's no good at all for this. (Or much, to be honest...)
