I have a set of early 80s Fenders pups and one is broken. Who do you send your pups to for a rewind and roughly what's the cost?

  • Mojo, Alegree or Oil City would be my suggestions.
No idea on price, but their work is exceptional.

To give you an idea on price, Bare Knuckle list a Strat rewind at £45 plus postage. So given that they'll probably be at the expensive end of things, that should give you a ballpark figure.

Might be worth adding The Creamery to the list too. Jaime did a great job on a set of Casino P90s for me.

For that figure, it would be tempting to find a pre-owned working pickup. Maybe, get one with a slightly higher output for the bridge position and have the two old Fender pickups in the neck and centre positions.

You do always have to balance the cost of a rewind with the cost of a new pickup. My own charges start at £30 a coil/pickup plus P&P.
For fairly generic pickups that are easy and cheap to replace ... get a new one/good second hand one
If it's important to you that the poles are aged to the same degree/ have the same stagger as your originals, the baseplates have the correct date marks etc, then your only choice is a rewind.

Of course with a rewind you can have extra turns on for a bridge pickup etc ... It's all 'you pays yer money and takes yer choice.

    Thanks for the info guys!

@monquixote - like these? They have an '82 stamp on them?

@OilCityPickups ; I will check out the outputs on the 2 that are working and maybe pm you on the one that has broken wire..

    Not sure

They are off a "The Strat" I have neck and middle.

If 83 is a year it won't be that as I think the guitar is an 80.

Those red bottom Fender pickups are comparatively scarce. Therefore, rewind entirely justified to preserve the perceived value of the guitar to anally retentive collectors.

The bridge position pickup used on The Strat was known as the X-1. According to the A. R. Duchossoir "train spotter" book, it was overwound to 9600 turns, 7.5k Ohms.

Yeah I've heard that about these. Think I will check the output on the other 2 pups and get it done :+1:

I think to go super anal the 1980 model didn't have the X-1 and it was introduced later. I also don't have the bridge pickup.

For the super anally retentive ... and some useless information:  the 'red bottom' flatwork material is simply a different flavour of the compressed, vulcanised fibre that the original black and later grey bottoms are cut from. This all has another use in the automotive industry as a gasket material ... where the red is much more popular :-)

I am surprised that, with all of these references to anal and red bottoms, nobody has piled on with bad taste jokes.

So all those JV youtube comparison vids with red vs black vs grey bottomed pups is nothing to do with the colour, but just the individual pup !!
