I don't mind 'mate' or 'pal' or 'buddy' - hell I use them a lot myself - but it's when they say 'hello you complete and utter fuckface' or 'what's your best price you stupid fucking cunt' that kinda irks me.

Yes, exactly. You're not really sure of the intent with "Pal".

It’s all in the context.  If it’s “Hey pal, is the Marshall still up for sale?” then it’s overly familiar annoyance.  If it’s “Listen pal..”, “Look here pal...” or “Right pal...” then it’s the literary equivalent of rolling the sleeves up.

I must admit I do use mate a lot but only if I don’t know their name. Even then I feel weird about it lol
