    I have bought and sold on reverb with no problems . 
    I find it better for me as a seller than eBay in many ways.
    I also don't scam people which makes it ok for my customers

    I have bought thousand quid guitars on Reverb, but only from bricks and mortar shops. 

    It's like buying from anywhere else - try to find a seller who has a reputation worth protecting.

    Also if you are paying cash on collection to a private individual I would always do in a bank branch. That way the seller can see you're not giving him forged notes and if he scarpers with the goods he's been caught on CCTV
