Just for the record I bow to the collective knowledge on push-push pots, I wasn't aware how unreliable they are.  I was talking their functionality, to me they are much better to use than trying to grab the control and pull on it, I much prefer the tap on/ tap off of the push-push pots.

So the next issue is a need an 8mm threaded shaft. The new ones recommended to me (Mojotone CTS) are 10mm.  I don’t want to have to drill my guitar for this.  Anyone recommend a good 8mm push/pull pot, please?

I have one of these (PTSW01) in a couple of my guitars.

Admittedly they don't get a huge amount of use but they are still going after several years.  They seem reasonable quality, with a good, positive, push/pull action, although the shaft has a tiny amount of lateral movement and very low turning friction, which some may think makes them feel on the cheap side.
One is fitted with a friction grip knob, the other with a grub screw type. I've not had any issues with either.
