Loads of times ...... the least coolest thing someone can do is worry about whether something is cool to do or not.

Agreed, it’s not as bad as someone wearing shorts on stage…  ;)

Sunglasses in a pub gig are in the grey ponytail bracket for me, sorry.
We need a separate thread for grey ponytails, and maybe another for pork pie hats
Don’t even look at it! Don’t touch it! Don’t point even...ok, you’ve seen enough of that one.

Low ceiling pubs with stage lighting is a recipe for a migraine. I don’t often wear them but sometimes it’s a better option than making yourself ill.

I need to wear reading glasses for playing with charts.  Up until now I've just been sticking on a pair of cheap Primark readers, because that's what I use for reading at home.  Having seen how naff they look on a recent video of a gig I think I'm going to invest in a couple of pairs of tinted aviator readers purely for gigs. I've worn "novelty" shades a la Bootsy on stage in the past but it was an exercise in obvious and deliberate bad taste.  This will be the first time I will look like I've actually joined the shades-on-stage-indoors set.  A bit naff, but the lesser of two evils.

Those are my 90s Lara Croft specials :).

As far as I'm concerned there will only be one style of sunglasses appropriate for rock & roll

Rayban Wayfarers then. I prefer Persols myself though.

And leather cowboy hats. In fact I've never seen one of those without a grey ponytail - are they sewn into the back of them?

A mate of mine used to.

Mind you, he was a TIG Welder.

  • I want to commend the restraint of Fretboarders for not posting pictures of Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.

(As opposed to people like me, who want to do the gag, but are too lazy to go and look for the pictures.)

  • I quite often wear sunglasses because it stops the stage lights dazzling me and also because sometimes I close my eyes when I'm singing and that make sme look weird.

In the early days I used to wear glasses and was very uncomfortable about my look, so very quickly started wearing contact lenses. But before I started wearing lenses I remember a gig at a local pub called the Salutation, I was about 17 and wanted to look cool, so took my glasses off and wore a pair of dark shades.
Unfortunately, a combination of no glasses, a dimly lit pub and a pair of dark shades meant I could not see a bloody thing. All I remember about the gig is struggling to even find my overdrive pedal…let alone my pint which always say on top my amp(yeah, not the best of idea’s).

    My mate did.

But he's a welder and he'd caught an arc earlier that day.

Thread resurrection - I’ve recently read that a lot of the original Chicago bluesmen wore dark glasses to hide their dilated pupils from club owners, booking agents, the law, etc.

I'll happily gig in shades, but only within a 106 mile radius of Chicago.

I have these glasses from Googles 4U that go dark in bright light and take a few seconds to go light again. So it looks like I'm wearing sun glasses. These cover both reading and distance prescriptions so I tend to wear them all the time and didn't think about the sunglasses indoors until a friend pointed it out.

Personally for me I'm aware I'm a 56 year old electronics engineer pretending to be a rock star anyway, so worrying about sunglasses indoors is probably not a massively important issue in the grand scheme of things.
