I was going to suggest that some of the "Couriers never pay compensation" comments are a little unfair.  I got a bit of money back on a damaged item with very little in the way of supporting evidence.  Sounds like this has resolved well for all concerned.

UPS refunded in full the shipping cost of a Marshall I sent to Italy which arrived a day later than it should have. I didn’t even have to argue, they just offered it. I was then £220 up on what was already a great sale.
