Incoming NGD: Cones of Glory.

I've been playing slide for a while now and wanted to go for a Resonator and found one for a decent price.
It is a Beard Deco Phonic Model 27- square neck model as I want to play lap-stylee.
Likely to use it mostly in Open G (GBDGBD).
Mine has a piezo, but will need a preamp so probably looking at a Fishman Aura.

Those square necks certainly have high actions as they’re never designed to be fretted. I remember my mate had a Dobro with a square neck in his shop some years ago. It was quite amusing watching people trying to play it like a normal guitar.

The stuff he did with Alison Krauss is top drawer - esp. the boy who wouldn’t hoe corn. 

I could listen to him to him all day tbh. Remarkably talented, and a really nice bloke to boot.

That’s a really nice reso, did you get it direct from Beard? Has that model got a tone ring or sound posts?

From an international dealer- I don't think I've seen a quality Reso anywhere in Singapore.

I'm not sure about the sound posts or tone ring.

For the mid tone slide sound the quality of a preamp/pedal is probably less critical than other applications (apart from background noise). But if you have or may one day have other acoustic instruments with pickups, I'd suggest looking at the Mesa Rosetta pedal. The range of Eq control is astonishing and the quality of construction is very solid. If your just occasionally going to 'plug it into a combo, then it's overkill and an Orchid or cheap Behringer might be better value.

For plugging in a dobro, especially a good one, with a piezo I'd say an Aura is pretty much essential.

Mostly I will not plugging it in- I've got some tasty mics here so if I get good enough to record I'll use those.
I have to learn to play the bugger first.

Mics would def. sound better than any kind of plugging in - resonators have such a complex and detailed sound acoustically.....
