How hot does your CPU get?

What's Hot

Just curious to know how hot your laptops get when you have a DAW project in full swing?

I took my reading with CoreTemp, which you can get here. https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp
Or Speedfan: /https://speedfan.en.softonic.com/

Simply let it run while you have a session in progress, take a screenshot and upload here. I use this site https://postimages.org/

What are your thoughts on this temperature - too high?

  • My 2018 MacBook Pro i7 8850H can stay at a boosted 4.1ghz running about 88c without thermal throttling. Your numbers look fine to me lol

Amazing turn out for this thread...

Why anyone wouldn't bother doing something as exciting as measuring their CPU temperature is mind boggling to me.

    Ha.

I wouldn't worry about it at those temps. My i5-8300h laptop gets hotter playing Company of Heroes. I use that Intel tweaking app as I'm considering messing around with voltages and have a cooling pad on order to see if that helps.

Generally doesn't go above 80c with CoH at the minute.

Anything above 85 is really too high ,yours is fine , especially for a laptop , my ryzen 7 gets to about 70c maxed out with liquid cooling so you're doing well

For reference...under load playing a project with 12 instances of Helix Native and a bunch of Reaper's built-in plugins, my desktop Core i7 6700 core temperatures are:

    Package id 0:  +35.0°C
    Core 0:        +29.0°C  (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    Core 1:        +31.0°C  (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    Core 2:        +27.0°C  (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
    Core 3:        +27.0°C  (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

(the "high" and "crit" are the limit thresholds)

That's with a fairly big but silent air cooler. I'll stick to my desktop for this sort of thing, thanks ;)

Just given my desktop a five minute stress test with Intel ETU. i7-4770 cooled with a Noctua NH-U14S and nothing else as part of a near-silent system built into a Fractal Core 500 case.

Didn't get above 60 degrees. Just illustrates the problems with cooling a laptop compared to a desktop.

It's one of the main reasons I always prefer using a desktop to a laptop. Portability's nice, and all, but a rock-solid machine which always has all of its performance available (ie without any kind of thermal effects or throttling) is worth more than the convenience of sitting in a coffee shop.

Also, I struggle to work without three monitors, which makes most portable applications somewhat redundant ;)

    Did they ever?

True...... but I never worry about my 2012 MBP when its running hot.... not even the 2015 that's in the house I use sometimes.... Im getting really paranoid about this 2018 though.

it’s good to know those temps are normal and that I don’t have to sell my Deluge to fund a new computer. I’ve actually put off learning it, thinking that my laptop could spontaneously combust at any minute. It is one of those well built workstations so I guess they’re design to last a good while. Next time though I will go the pc route for reasons mentioned here.

Been testing a pair of laptops this morning: my i5-8300H Windows 10 machine and a new Acer Swift 3 (i3 8th gen processor, W10).

The Acer is going to my mum next week, just doing my usual tweaks. The Intel XTU stress test on this got up to 72C. Prime95 for an hour got it up to 92c.

I tried a loaned Coolermaster cooling pad It did absolutely bugger all.

Interestingly I have disabled Speedstep on my laptop. Seems to have a decent effect on temps.

    Update:

Plenty of messing around with my laptop. Reenabled speedstep but disabled Intel Turbo Boost technology. Also opened up the laptop and redid the thermal paste on the CPU. Dropped by a couple of degrees C.

Turbo Boost is the big one though. With it enabled and the laptop power set to Max Performance, it was clocking above 80c after a Prime95 stress test.

With power at balanced and max CPU state at 99% and Turbo Boost set to off.... much lower. Keeping it like this now as it has more than enough grunt for my uses and the fans barely kick in.
