Second guitar ideas

What's Hot

I have a great Les Paul which is my main guitar but am looking for something to complement it. The second guitar will be used as a back up to the Les Paul for gigs so needs to be able to cover most of the same ground (blues / classic rock - up to GnR / Whitesnake levels of gain) but I would also like it to offer some slightly different tones so don’t really want another dual humbucker guitar.

So I have been thinking of the new P90 equipped 50 Les Paul, maybe a Les paul special or perhaps a HSS S type guitar like a Suhr/Xotic. I even thought about a 611 Yamaha Pacifica as they seem great value for money and I think they look very cool! It needs to be hard tail though as we use some different tunings in the band.

Any others I should look at?

It’s all a question of value for money, hence considering a 611 Pacifica and a Suhr. Max budget would be £1800 maybe 2k at a push for something very exceptional

How about something from the ESP LTD EC-1000 range of guitars? LP shaped so you're used to that and there are different pickup options and with your budget will leave enough left over for another amp (if you want one that is!).
Tomorrow will be a good day.

A Gretsch Jet (proper of course) would do the same job but in a very different way. Well within your budget there.

The more middle of the road approach would be a tele with a neck HB, or a Strat with a bridge one. Depending on which end you like thick and which you like crunchy?

Correct answer. A Telecaster covers the same ground. It is sufficiently different so that you won’t be constantly comparing it with your Les Paul, but not so different that you want to rearrange what and how you play

You’d have to adjust your playing for the neck position and balance

watching thread, also fancy something as a second to my LP Classic (once my BFG moves on) and playing the same kinds of tunes.

criteria - not a Strat (ergonomically I need a thicker body for left wrist positioning), not a fat neck, not covered in plastic, wear and tear is fine, must rock. not a "precious" guitar, will be played in garden, gigged.

  • The Gibson ES339 is likely my next guitar to back up my Les Paul.
They reportedly sound closer to the LP than the 335 and rock pretty well too.

  • Even though I'm not a fan, it sounds like a tele would be right up your street.

There’s a good reason that many mistakenly think old Jimbo Page’s sound on the early led zep stuff is a Les Paul, when it’s actually a Tele.

IMHO the early stuff has a better sound, and a Tele would be a perfect choice to complement a Les Paul.

Also useful as brute force weapon if the crowd gets unruly

Tele. Or a Jaguar because of the scale length - it will feel closer to Gibson.
