70s 3 bolt strats converted to 4 bolt?

Was it common place to convert a 3 bolt neck joint to a 4 bolt?    I can see how a badly fitting neck that isn’t very stable would benefit, if it’s done well but I’ve only come across a couple and in both cases it looked a bit unnecessary.

Thankfully not that common, and pointless - the problem isn't the number of bolts, it's the fit of the neck into the pocket.

The correct solution is to either veneer the neck pocket sides, or pin/mesh/sandpaper the floor of the pocket - equally effective if not more so, and doesn't make an ugly mess of the back of the guitar - it's impossible to do well because the four-bolt plate doesn't quite cover the hole for the tilt adjuster screw on the three-bolt, and the two outer holes don't quite line up.

Three bolts with any of those solutions is more stable than four without.

I posted this in another thread but it's worth repeating...

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

    I wouldn't bother converting a 3-bolt guitar, but I do have a 3-bolt CBS neck on a 4-bolt body.

Not for me thanks dude! I'm not really a Strat sort of guy, although I think they look fab

(And yes, I know my Squier is a Strat, but it has active humbuckers, a Floyd Rose, and the volume knob isn't so close to the bridge)
