not sure if this is the right section but I can move it if not :)

I’ve been listening to Odessy’s ‘Going back to my routes’ It’s a great tune but trying to work out its chords. I know the basic chords of course but they just sound wrong when playing over the song etc and wondered if anyone here uses some cool tasty chord extensions on that song if they perform it etc

I can paste a link to the songs if you need clarification but feel you’d probably know it anyway

I don't actually know the chords to this track but I'd be surprised if it weren't straight Major and Minor 7th chords.

Check out  Jason Reads YouTube channel, he covers loads of these tracks and is normally pretty accurate.

Yeah I've viewed that. Doesn't sound quite right to me some of that tbh.

I never really thought of that as a 'guitar  song' but it's chocka with great guitar. Very little if anything I would describe as a guitar chord in there?
Fairly sure Jason's video ( above) doesn't have the riff correct. This one sounds better, might help if you can speak Russian ( ?) but there's a good close up.

Ahh. lot of people on the internet trying to teach that riff, not so much the bridge or the solos.

They sound nice chords though. I’ll work them out sooner or later :)

So the song is in D# minor.

Over the chords is a guitar melody which puts one off a bit, and if we can find chords that incorporate those notes at the top, that would be good.

    The notes are G#_____ A# G# F#____

    The chords are

    D#m
    B
    C#
    G#m

    The chord extensions are:

    D#m9
    Bmaj7add9
    C#add9
    G#m

and if you add the solo notes on top it would be

    D#m9add11
    Bmaj7 add9 add maj14
    C#add9 add12
G#m7 (the 7th is an octave up, so add14)

    I make that:
    X64664
    798876
    X43444
    46647x

or something. I haven’t got a guitar to hand, so there is very possibly a mistake or two!

Hate to say it @viz but not quite. Definitely the first chord is spot on i.e. D#m9add11. Not sure of the others but as you say you don't have your guitar with you. Love these extentioned chords though :)

Nothing that fancy going on really. In a nutshell it’s this...

    Db/Eb - Ebm7 - Db/Eb - Ebm7 - Db - Abm7

    Obvious voicings,

    Db/Eb - x6666x
    Ebm7 - x6867x
    Db - x4666x
    Abm7 - 4x444x

The harmony is spread nicely between the instruments so it’s a little trickier on guitar, but try these,

    Db/Eb - x6x664
    Ebm7 - x6x676
    Db - x4x664
    Abm7 - 4xx442

But the triads in the top 3 strings will suffice.

Sounds good @Brad thanks. Not sure about that last chord though i.e. Abm7?

@hotpickups No probs man. I did say in a nutshell  but yep, it is Abm7.

It’s the way the voices are spread and the instrumentation that’s probably making you question it. If we play conventional guitar shapes for Abm7, it doesn’t quite sound right does it? Too congested and a little flat...

Keep the 7th at the top of chord (as with my 2nd option). The distance from the root (pun intended) makes it more ‘open’ sounding, kinda suggesting an Abm11,which has that sound and would also work.

Sorry can we confirm what key this song is in? D# minor has been mentioned ?

I’m still working on my theory but where does Abm fit in that if it was that key?

Yeah of course, if you want to think of the key as being D#m, then that Abm would be G#m. Same things, just viewed differently. I’m thinking in a flat key as opposed to a sharp key, but either is fine.

    C#/D# (AKA D#11)
    D#m7
    C#
    G#m7
