My garage conversion

So structurally this was finished in January but only really got it ship shape now. I didnt go for any sound proofing. The acoustic panels are a bit too shallow to really control the bass but they were inherited and the one above the drums does help with the cymbals being very in your face as they are against the wall.

Anyways im quite happy with it.

Looks great! I had mine converted as well between Nov 2018 - March 2019. Is it a detached one? Mine is detached which is helps with keeping the neighbours sweet, as its 50 ft away from any houses.

Nah its internal...our bedroom is above it that meant all the walls were already up to regs though which helped.

Ah I see, I think I remember you mentioning you were thinking of having a conversion when I made a thread about having ours done. We were lucky we had the existing shell so all we had to do was to upgrade windows and doors, add electrics and a fair bit of plasterwork was needed.

Think both turned out alright though eh!

Nice job.  I did something similar with my integral garage about 12 years ago.

If you wanted to improve the acoustics (more neutral mix environment rather than sound 'proofing') you could use more / deeper panels but you could also improve things by firing your monitors down the length of the room i.e. set up your mix position to face the window.   Of course this is a big compromise in terms of usable space.  In the real world the Man Cave has to accommodate all the stuff in the house that isn't hers.  In your case that drum kit is dictating the room layout to a large extent.

Have you got good headphones to mix on?  I know at least one professional who mixes entirely on headphones.  I've started using mine more and more to check the low end and stereo imaging although I still like to do the bulk of the work using the monitors.

I see a HiFi set, but no sofa!
We did have the spare sofa bed in there for a few months but it was just monopolising the space so it went back upstairs to the kids playroom. If we have guests they'll just have to put up with sleeping amongst all the toys :)

The hi-fi isnt connected up yet but I only really plan to use it for playing the odd CD thats not on streaming services as my main PC no longer has a CD drive and thought it might double as a reference system.

Yeah absolutely, the panels are rockwool so theyre dense but could be done with being about and inch thicker really. I got them for free from an audiophile mate though so not complaining.

I did think about having the desk in front of the window and the drums in the corener with the mural but couldnt work out where to make everything else fit in that layout.. One improvement that I could try with little effort is to swap the main desk and small desk to get the right hand speaker a little further a way from the corner.

I use DT880s for most stuff though as the majority of my music'ing is done when the kids are asleep. I believe Nolly mixes predominantly on headphones and he produces some killer mixes.

  • I use phones for checking low-end as well. My room is pretty well balanced but there is a bit of a bump at 50hz and 100hz. I've got DT770's but to be honest I prefer to use my Soundmagic E10's !

    Bye!

I too had some acoustic panels made of wooden frames and rockwool stuff inside covered in fabric cloth. They're 100mm thick and seem to do a good job of taming down any room reverb. I had to get 12 in total but its done the trick nicely and the sound in there is pretty good.
