I've actually just blond-ordered a cracker of a guitar which should suit this music really well - big gamble for me (who rarely buys anything and even then after physically trying out many!) so let's see.... Really looking forward to getting into this music more. 

Prices have gone up a bit. I think a new OM-02 is closer to £1200 so I'm glad I bought when I did..! It sounds absolutely fantastic!! What guitars do you play?

I think the crackles were added later, I think he is using a pickup into reverb

That's a great vid, I haven't come across that builder before either. These days I play a Ryan Gerber RL15+ or a 1959 Martin 00018. I also have an Eastman for some recording work - their J45 style (I can't remember what they call it)

The Tain was brilliant, I was always surprised at their lack of success.

Saw them at Edinburgh University c1976/77 on the "Book of Invasions" tour.  Great band and Johnny Fean is a very distinctive guitarist

@TimmyO I think it was you who mentioned the Tony McManus truefire series. Have you tried it? 
I believe you can buy them without being a member...

I'm a member so have nosed at it - it's not.somethijg unwanted to study so.not been through it all - there seems to be a fair bit of material and he has a nice teaching demeanour about him.

You should be able to get free access to everything for a few days if you sign up a free account

So I spent all night trying to play a Stephen Wake tune in Orkney tuning (CGDGCD). 

I swore, being a scalic electric guitarist, that I'd never do alternate tunings... But here I am. Sounds amazing but want to learn more. Immediately notice strings are flappy. But what do guitarists do who alternate between tunings at gigs.... choose optimum string sets (e.g. thicker selected strings) for multiple guitars tuned differently or just have the one and cope with the tension changes?

Well done for getting into it,
options are:

1. put up with it
2. tune all the strings up a semitone or two
3. use thicker strings
4. dedicate a guitar to a tuning

@ToneControl ;I think I'm going to keep the AValon in Orkney tuning for now. But there are 11s on and I'm detuning so I'm worried there's not enough tension!! Might have to put 12s on.... 

I think live I might have 2 acoustics, one for each tuning.
