Drilling a neck

What's Hot
What’s the best/easiest way to drill a neck without a drill press?

I’ve got a HOSCO neck that needs drilling to suit a second hand body. The fit seems to be pretty snug and ‘good’ although I haven’t checked it’s lined up straight. Is this something I can do with a normal cordless drill or should I just try and find/borrow a drill press?

Clamp the two together firmly and check the alignment.

First use a drill that only just fits through the body holes, and use it to make shallow holes in the neck - just through the surface - that will make sure the holes are perfectly centred.

Then use the right drill for the screw holes into the neck - drill through the body into the neck, keeping the drill centred in the holes - that will ensure they're vertical.

Mark the total length of the screws on the drill bit!
