Dot wont tune?

What's Hot
I’ve restrung my Epi Dot. Tuned to pitch, intonation seems good.
Strum a G chord and it comes out minorish? What’s happening how can it be at pitch and also not in tune?

  • Have you tuned to the correct notes? There might be a string tuned half a step down (possibly the B to make it a Bb which makes it a minor 3rd hence why you hear a minor chord)

  • Yep, we’ll i think so. I just stomped on the TU2 and did the normal. I’ll check!

If there's a dot by the note it means its a flat or sharp so it could be your A string too tuned half a step out

  • 1) Intonation could be out.*
    2) Truss rod too slack.
    3) The nut slots may be cut too high.

    * Several possible reasons.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

New strings need to be stretched out.  Give them at tug at the 12th and 7th, tune to pitch and repeat (2-3 times should be enough)

Also, always tune up to the note. Go flat and then tune up

FWIW it doesn't matter where you pull them, the tension you create is the same along the whole length. At the 12th fret is easiest.

And you are not stretching them just bedding them in at the contact points, i.e. removing any slack at the tuner posts etc.

  • Maybe the nut needs a fettle?

  • I’ll have a fettle at lunchtime. Just surprised after owning 15yrs to have a problem tuning it :-)

  • In that case, you could have a bad batch of strings. (Possibly, even, counterfeit.)

  • Firm tug has sorted it. Still bewildered as to how it can be at pitch but resonate out of tune.

  • It could still need a trussrod, intonation & nut tweak

was it a wound string? Just guessing here, but I wonder if there was  a slight constriction in the winding and the tug cleared it.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

Sounds like binding in a too-tight nut slot to me, but anyway, glad you got it sorted!
