Any love for Leslie West / Mountain?

What's Hot
Browsing through some song TAB I've come across a song that I hadn't heard of before that I thought the guitar part was doable for a fading rock star/deluded old duffer like me. The song is Mississippi Queen.  Nice growly heavy blues sound when I checked it out on the Toob. Yeah......I should be butchering the songs riff and solo very shortly.

Great band, great underrated player too. The cover of Theme From An Imaginary Western another goodie - loads of live bootlegs on YouTube as well. Worth sifting through a few and finding your songs.

Big geetar hero of mine I have to say.

    Cheers

Great player. The first album I purchased was Mountain - Flowers Of Evil.

On paper the notes might look simple, but capturing those wonderful bends and vibrato is another thing.

In terms of tone and controlled technique Leslie West was way ahead of his time around 1970.

I can't really say all the albums stand the test of time, but he was a great player.

Yes. I had Twin Peaks for many years and loved Mississippi Queen, Crossroader, and Blood Of The Sun especially - just massive tones.

I also saw them about fifteen years ago in Glasgow, at the Renfrew Ferry. I have to say his sound wasn't all that great - a couple of Marshall Super Leads, but he insisted on using a Zoom 9002 mounted on a mic stand for his effects - he was certainly loud, and played with great presence and authority despite the tone being a bit weirdly metallic! It didn't really matter.

I only dig that weekend world one the Heavy bit. As an obsessed kid I use to watch that programme for the music every week. And then got into Brian and his interviews. Absolutely superb. What a pro - incisive, methodical, piercing and a perfect gentleman.

I spent many a pleasant hour in my 1970's youth listening to the albums Flowers Of Evil and Nantucket Sleighride. They were such a great band were all the members just gelled together to give such a unique sound at that time.

I loved West's guitar tone and chops and Felix Pappalardi was a wonderfully melodic bass player. His soft vocals were the perfect counterpoint to West's gruff voice.

Yes.  One of my favourite players and favourite bands.  When I was at university I got all the early LPs on Japanese imports, which were pretty expensive at the time.  I still listen to them a lot (the band, not those LPs, although I still have them).

Michael Schenker has often cited him as an influence.

    I like that.

Who wants live music that sounds like a CD?

    I'll have to get a Vintage Vs6 with P90s...
